As of April 09, 2026, India’s population is estimated at 1,473,722,931, based on linear interpolation between the most recent official reference dates in the United Nations population projections.

As of July 1, 2026, the population of India is projected at 1,476,625,576, or 1.48 billion, or 148 crores, compared to 1,463,865,525, or 1.46 billion, or 146 crores, on July 1, 2025. India is the most populous country in the world, overtaking China in 2022. By 2028, the population is expected to cross 1.5 billion, and projections indicate it will peak at 1.70 billion in 2062 before gradually decreasing to 1.51 billion by 2100.

India accounts for just 2.4% of the world's surface area but supports 17.79% of the global population. Since the population of India will increase at a slower rate than the world onward from 2029, its global share will decrease. By 2100, 14.79% of the earth's population will be in India; that is 3.01% less than the peak level of 17.80% in 2029.

The population growth rate for 2026 is projected at 0.86%, which is 106th highest among 237 countries/dependent territories. The population growth reached a peak in 1961 with an annual growth rate of 2.41%. India will add 12.66 million in 2026, which is near to the population of 79th-ranked Bolivia. The net increase of the population per year peaked in 2001 with almost 20.1 million.

According to the Census of India 2011, the population of India stood at 1,210,854,977. The percentage of decadal growth during 2001-2011 was 17.70%, 3.84% lower than the 1991-2001 period. The percentage of decadal growth during 2001-2011 has registered the sharpest decline since independence. The population of India had increased by 182.1 million during the decade 2001-2011. The increased population during the decade 2001-2011 is approximately equal to that of Pakistan, the sixth most populous country in the world.

The population of India, which at the turn of the twentieth century was only around 238.4 million, increased by more than five times in a period of 110 years to reach 1,210 million in 2011. The population of India has increased by 3.35 times since independence.
