The current population of Europe is 744,196,030 as of October 05, 2025, based on interpolation of the latest United Nations data. The population of Europe is projected at 744,398,832, or 744.4 million, as of July 1, 2025. The total population in Europe is projected at 745,083,824, or 745.1 million, for the year 2024. Europe is the only continent whose population has peaked, with 749.2 million people in 2020.

Europe is the third-most populous continent behind Asia and Africa. Europe was the second-most populous continent until 1994 before being overtaken by Africa and is projected to be surpassed by North America in 2054. Europe accounts for 9.04 percent of the world population. Its global share has been declining since 22% in 1950 and is projected to decrease to 5.82% by 2100.

Thirty-eight percent of the European population lives in Eastern Europe, 26.8 percent in Western Europe, 20.25 percent in Southern Europe, and 14.7 percent in Northern Europe.

Europe has a negative population growth rate of -0.10% for 2025, much lower than the 2nd lowest at 0.56% of South America. Europe has been the slowest-growing continent since 1950 and is expected to remain so until 2069, when South America will have the lowest figure. The population growth peaked in 1957, with an annual growth rate of 1.09%. Northern Europe is the only growing subregion in Europe. Southern Europe, Western Europe, and Eastern Europe have a negative growth rate. After 2055, all European subregions will have a declining population. Northern Europe will have more people than Southern Europe onward from the year 2072.

Europe will see 777,052 fewer people in 2025, with Northern Europe adding 480,460 people. Southern, Eastern, and Western Europe will have 441,970, 418,510, and 397,030 fewer people. The net increase of the population per year peaked in 1958, with almost 6.5 million.
