Population of Europe

As of 1 July 2021, the population of Europe is projected at almost 748 million or 747,747,396 people. Europe is the third-most continent continent behind Asia and Africa. Thirty-nine percent of the European population lives in Eastern Europe, 26 percent in Western Europe, 20 percent in Southern Europe, and 14 percent in Northern Europe. Europe accounts for 9.59 percent of the world population. Its global share has been declining since 21.66% of 1950 and is projected to decline at 5.79% by 2100.

Europe was the second-most populous continent until 1995 before being overtaken by Africa and projected to be surpassed by North America in 2054. The population of Europe is about to peak in the year 2021.

Europe has the lowest population growth rate of 0.01% for 2021, much lower than the 2nd lowest at 0.76% of North America. Europe is the slowest growing continent since 1950 and is expected to remain until 2072 when South America has the lowest figure. The population growth reached a peak in 1954, with an annual growth rate of 1.01%. Northern Europe is the fastest-growing subregion in Europe, followed by Western Europe. Eastern Europe and Southern Europe have a negative growth rate of 0.15%. At the end of the century, Northern Europe will be the only subregion without a declining population. Northern Europe will have more people than Southern Europe onward the year 2071.

Europe will add only 111,351 people in 2021, with Western and Northern regions adding 456,909 and 451,249 people, respectively. Eastern and Southern will have 526,606 and 270,20 people less than of 2020. The net increase of the population per year peaked in 1962, with almost 6.1 million.
