The current population of Asia is 4,812,438,500 as of September 09, 2024, based on interpolation of the latest United Nations data. The population of Asia is projected to be around 4.79 billion or 4,785 million or 4,785,060,131 people as of July 1, 2024. The total population in Asia is projected close to 4.75 billion or 4,753 million or 4,753,079,727 people in 2023. Asia will add 520 mn more before reaching a peak in 2055, with home to 5.31 billion people.

Asia is the most populous continent by a massive margin as it has a population of nearly 3.2x of the second-most populous continent Africa. Asia accounts for almost three-fifths percent of the world population. Its global share was maximum in 2001 (60.77%).

The Southern Asia region accounts for over two-fifths percent of the Asian population as it hosts India, the most populous country in the world. Eastern Asia accounts for 35% as it hosts China, the second most populous country in the world. These two subregions together account for 78% of the continent’s population. Southern Asia overtook Eastern Asia in 2002 to become the most populous subregion in the world. 14.5 percent of the Asian population lives in South-Eastern Asia, 6 percent in Western Asia, and 1.67 percent in Central Asia.

Asia has the 4th highest population growth rate of 0.66 % for 2024, below Africa, Oceania and South America. Western Asia is the fastest-growing subregion in Asia, followed by Central Asia. Eastern Asia has the negative growth rate and is the only sub-region projected a negative growth rate until the year 2050. At the end of the century, all subregions will have a declining population except Central Asia. The population growth reached a peak in 1963, with an annual growth rate of 2.74%.

With adition of 31.7 million people in 2024, Asia is the 2nd highest contributor to the total world population increment, which is near the population of the 49th ranked Nepal. The net increase in the population per year peaked in 1987, with almost 61 million.
