According to the IMF World Economic Outlook (October 2025), the United States's nominal GDP in 2025 is projected to be around $30.62 trillion, $1.86 trillion more than the $28.75 trillion in 2024. Over the past eight years, the United States has added roughly $10 trillion to its nominal GDP.
In 1969, the United States became the world’s first national economy to surpass $1 trillion in nominal GDP, marking its entry into the trillion-dollar economy milestone. Just three decades later, by 2000, U.S. GDP had expanded tenfold to surpass $10 trillion. The growth continued, reaching $20 trillion in 2018, and is projected to cross $30 trillion by 2025.
The United States currently accounts for about 26.1 percent of the world's GDP. Its share of global GDP has shifted significantly. At its peak in 1960, the U.S. accounted for nearly 40 percent of the world’s economy. By 2011, this share had fallen to a low of 21 percent before rising again to about 26 percent today.
The United States is currently the largest economy in the world, leading second-ranked China by roughly $11.22 trillion. It has maintained its position as the world’s top economy throughout the modern era. Estimates by the World Bank are available since 1960, when the country's GDP was 542 billion USD.
The United States has the highest output in the services sector globally, which accounts for approximately 77.6% of its GDP. In industry, the U.S. ranks second behind China, contributing around 17.9% of GDP. In agriculture, it ranks third behind China and India, making up only about 1% of GDP.
The United States accounts for approximately 86.1 percent of North America’s total nominal GDP.
Based on PPP, the United States's GDP in 2025 is forecast at 30.62 trillion international dollars, making it the second-largest in the world, trailing China by $10.4 trillion. The U.S. was overtaken by China in 2014 in PPP terms. It currently contributes about 14.7% of the world’s total GDP (PPP). For the United States, GDP at PPP is nearly identical to nominal GDP, reflecting that the country serves as the benchmark for international price comparisons.
Within North America, the United States accounts for nearly 17.9 percent of the region’s total GDP at PPP.
