As per the report of the Technical Group by the National Commission, the population of Delhi is projected to be 22,277,000, or 22.28 million, or 2.23 crore, as of July 1, 2025. Delhi is the most populous UT in India and is in 19th position among all states and UTs. Delhi’s population is projected to reach 2.67 crore in 2036.
The size of the population of Delhi is equivalent to that of Malawi, the 62nd most populous country in the world.
In 2025, the sex ratio of the total population in Delhi will be 113.340 males per 100 females. There are 11,835,000, or 11.84 million, or 1.18 crore, males and 10,442,000, or 10.44 million, or 1.04 crore, females in Delhi. Delhi has 1,393,000, or 1.39 million, more males than females.
Delhi accounts for 1.56 percent of the Indian population, the highest since 1901. The population growth rate in 2025 is projected at 1.80%, the 3rd highest among all states and UTs. Delhi will add 393k more people in 2025.
According to the Census of India 2011, the population of the state of Delhi was 1.68 crore, increasing from 1.39 crore in 2001. There were 8,987,326 males and 7,800,615 females, with a sex ratio of 115.213 males per 100 females. The percentage of decadal growth during 2001–2011 was 21.21 %, 25.81 % higher than the 1991–2001 period. The population of Delhi increased by 2.94 million during the decade 2001–2011.
The population of Delhi, which at the turn of the twentieth century was around 4.18 million, increased by approximately 55 times in 123 years to reach 22.28 million in 2025. In 1901, Delhi was in 23rd place among all states and UTs, but as of 2025, it has surpassed four states and UTs: Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Goa.
