As per the report of the Technical Group by the National Commission, the population of Telangana is projected to be 38,499,000, or 38.50 million, or 3.85 crore, as of July 1, 2025. Telangana is the 13th most populous state in India and the fourth-most populous state in South India. Telangana’s population is projected to reach 3.95 crore in 2036.
The size of the population of Telangana is equivalent to that of Morocco, the 41st most populous country in the world. Only three countries in South America, seven in Europe, three in North America, and eleven in Africa have more people than Telangana.
In 2025, the sex ratio of the total population in Telangana will be 101.055 males per 100 females. There are 19,351,000, or 19.35 million, or 1.94 crore, males and 19,149,000, or 19.15 million, or 1.92 crore, females in Telangana. Telangana has 202,000, or 202k, more males than females.
Telangana accounts for 2.72 percent of the Indian population, 0.36% less than the peak of 3.08% in 1991. The population growth rate in 2025 is projected at 0.48%, the 4th lowest among states. Telangana will add 182k more people in 2025.
According to the Census of India 2011, the population of the state of Telangana was 3.52 crore, increasing from 3.10 crore in 2001. There were 17,704,078 males and 17,489,900 females, with a sex ratio of 101.225 males per 100 females. The percentage of decadal growth during 2001-2011 was 13.58%, 5.19% lower than in 1991-2001. The population of Telangana increased by 4.21 million during the decade 2001-2011.
The population of Telangana, which at the turn of the twentieth century was around 5.97 million, increased by approximately 6.45 times in 124 years to reach 38.50 million in 2025. In 1901, Telangana was the 15th most populous state, but as of 2025, it has overtaken Punjab and Kerala.
