Projected GDP Ranking

As of 2026, the United States and China rank as the world's two largest economies under both nominal GDP and purchasing power parity (PPP) GDP measures. In nominal terms, the gap between the two economies continues to narrow, as China's GDP is projected to grow by 4.41% in 2026, compared with 2.32% for the United States. Nevertheless, the United States is expected to remain the largest economy by nominal GDP, leading China by approximately US$11.5 trillion.

On a PPP basis, China remains the world's largest economy, with an estimated GDP that exceeds that of the United States by Int. $11.9 trillion in 2026. The gap is projected to widen further in the coming years, reflecting China's stronger economic growth. China is expected to retain its position as the largest economy by PPP GDP over the coming decades, while the United States continues to rank second. Although India is projected to remain the fastest-growing among the three largest economies, it is still substantially smaller than both China and the United States in PPP terms.

Germany overtook Japan in 2023 to become the world's third-largest economy by nominal GDP. The rankings of Japan, the United Kingdom, and India are expected to change over the coming years, as the three economies are projected to remain close in size, currently ranking fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively.

In the PPP rankings, the top three positions are expected to remain unchanged, as each of the top three economies maintains a substantial lead over the next-ranked economy.

In the nominal GDP rankings, two changes are expected within the top 10. Italy is projected to overtake Russia, while Brazil is expected to replace Canada. Within the top 20, Australia and Mexico are both projected to move ahead of Spain and South Korea in the rankings. Among the top 50 economies, Colombia is expected to record the largest improvement, climbing five positions in the rankings, followed by Nigeria, which is projected to move up three places.

In the PPP rankings, no changes are expected within the top 20. Among the top 50 economies, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Ukraine are each projected to climb two places. In contrast, Iraq is expected to record the largest decline, falling four positions, followed by Iran, which is projected to drop three places.

Among the top 50 economies, Vietnam is projected to be the fastest-growing in 2026, with a GDP growth rate of 7.10%, followed by India (6.48%) and Taiwan (5.18%). Italy is projected to record the lowest GDP growth rate among the top 50 economies in 2026.

In nominal terms, the United States (1, 8) is the only economy that ranks among the top 10 in both GDP and GDP per capita. Germany (3, 18), Australia (12, 12), the Netherlands (18, 10), and Switzerland (20, 4) also rank among the top 20 in both GDP and GDP per capita. On a PPP basis, the United States (2, 12), Saudi Arabia (17, 20), and Taiwan (20, 9) are the only economies that rank among the top 20 in both GDP and GDP per capita.
